Growth as a Choice, Adversity as a Teacher

Price is celebrating its 75th anniversary throughout 2024, and our commemoration of this milestone will dedicate special attention to the 13 tenets of the Price Way. Each post in this blog series explores one of these guiding principles, giving our blog readers a closer look at its meaning.

In this post, we’ll be looking at what growth means at Price.

Price Industries’ first manufacturing footprint in the US: an 80,000-square-foot facility leased in Norcross, GA, in 1987

Growth is imperative for every organization. In the business world, there is no such thing as the status quo; you are either growing or shrinking. The concept brings to mind the character Alice in Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass, who while racing with the Red Queen observes that she isn’t getting any farther despite running very fast. Hearing Alice’s complaints, the Red Queen remarks, “It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get some-where else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!”

At Price, growth is not something that happens to us; it is something we choose. It comes with risks and perils that arise from venturing into a new territory, and each new venture brings its own setbacks. But the years have shown us that adversity is the best teacher, and the lessons we’ve learned by solving these problems and surviving these crises are ones we will never forget. They teach us as much as our successes do and set us up to conquer even greater challenges in the future.

Using these lessons to effectively scale our business has allowed us to dominate in the market. We’ve entered new product categories, revolutionized our factories, expanded our footprint and elevated what it means to serve in the industry. And along with our representatives and partners that exemplify this same spirit of growth, much of this is thanks to our team members who approach every opportunity with confidence and to our leaders who never take their eyes off the horizon. This gumption is woven into the very fabric of our corporate culture.

Without adopting a growth strategy and scaling our business, we would not be celebrating 75 years. And although Alice’s legs may have tired while running with the Red Queen, we will learn, adapt and evolve until we’re unstoppable.
