In collaboration with 701 Architecture Inc., our warming hut design for the arts and architecture competition is currently on the Centennial River Trail at the Forks in Winnipeg, MB.
Assembly is the fitting together of component parts of the object. Two intersecting 6 ft x 6 ft x 10 ft volumes – each scaled for a single person – are constructed using our prefabricated structural acoustic panels clad in G90 galvanized sheet steel on the exterior and dark perforated sheet steel on the interior. Moving around the cold, glossy exterior, one catches glimpses of others, along with the shelter’s exterior appearance being influenced by its surroundings. Once inside, the darkened anechoic space puts distance between you and the outside world and places you face to face with another in the space between.
Assembly lessens the distance between us. The warming hut design allows for two individual visitors to enter at separate entries and is divided by a visual wall in between. The six-foot modules organize Assembly in a manner encouraging safe static distancing when interacting with the exterior, while providing physical screening through sheet steel panels and clear acrylic windows when inside.
Price acoustic panels allowed for quick and easy assembly using the interlocking tongue-and-groove design, and offers a unique sensory experience, with the sound absorbing properties of the panels creating an immersive interior space to the visitor. The construction of Assembly took place in a Price manufacturing facility in Winnipeg the week of January 25, 2021.
